Asbury Park Picks Up 23rd Straight Class B Central Win

ASBURY PARK – Last season the Asbury Park boys soccer team won the program’s first sectional state title since 1981 when they defeated Palmyra, 1-0, for the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I championship.

They also went undefeated in Class B Central play to take the division title on the way to an 18-win season after winning just five games the year before.

In last Tuesday’s 3-2 win over division rival St. Rose, the Blue Bishops (11-1, 9-0) extended their division winning streak to 23 straight games dating back to the 2015 season.

With just three division games left on their regular season schedule, Asbury Park is seeking their second straight season of undefeated play within the Class B Central and only needed to defeat Point Pleasant Beach on Monday, October 9 to clinch the division title for the second consecutive season after going more than three decades without one prior to 2016.

In their win over St. Rose, senior striker Davensky JoinVilmar and junior Wenderlens Garius scored in the first half and Johnny Phillipe’s second-half goal proved to be the difference.

JoinVilmar is a four-year starter, who is also a state champion in the high jump. He was a second-team All-Shore selection a year ago when he scored 16 goals and assisted on another 15. His goal against St. Rose was his 20th of the season and he has scored in all 11 of Asbury Park’s games. It took JoinVilmar just eight games to match his goal total that took 22 games a year ago.

The Blue Bishops returned four All-Division selections from a year ago including Shown Narcissi, Widmair Beaubrun, Stevenson Jean Baptiste and Garius.

Beaubrun is a senior forward that can also play goalie if called upon as in last season’s championship game when he was in goal and rolled a shutout stopping 13 shots on goal. Narcissi is a senior defenseman who scored five goals last season and Jean Baptiste is a junior midfielder who recorded five goals and three assists last season. Garius is another two-way defenseman for the Bishops who can find the back of the net when called upon.

Also back from a year ago is junior midfielder Jonathan Desulme after scoring two goals and adding three assists and forward Jean Osner Peirre, who chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Freshman Woodley Cagilus has been in goal most the season and has done a solid job protecting the net especially for a first-year varsity player.

In last season’s Shore Conference Tournament, Asbury Park was seeded tenth and just got by No.23 seed Donovan Catholic, 1-1, on penalty shots in the first round before losing, 2-0, to seventh-seeded Middletown North in the Round of 16. Seeing that it was their first post-season action in over 30 years, getting that first win was huge.

This is a very good team from a small school that made its mark a year ago, so with the experience they gained from last season’s post-season run, look for Asbury Park to make some noise come post-season time once again this year
