Giants Training Camp: Tuesday Takeaways for 8.16.22

It’s another beautiful Tuesday in New Jersey and that means I spent my morning at Quest Diagnostics Center covering New York Giants training camp for the third week in a row.

News came down early this morning that the Giants were ahead of schedule in making roster cuts by releasing TE Jeremiah Hall, DB Gavin Heslop and WR Austin Proehl. When head coach Brian Daboll was asked why the cuts were made Tuesday morning, he said, “Me and Joe Schoen decided to make the cuts this morning to do right by the players. They were getting cut anyway. I’m going to keep those conversations private, but we always approach them with empathy and respect.”

Daboll was also asked about the progress of the hotly contested Kenny Golladay, who has had a rather controversial camp. “Kenny is improving but everyone is going to compete. We are evaluating everything.”

One area where there is no controversy despite what many people may think, is the quarterback position. Daboll made it clear Daniel Jones is the QB1 and has “full confidence” in him. He also said Tyrod Taylor may get a few reps with the 1st team and that it’s “not a reflection of Daniel Jones” but rather a best practice he has learned over the years. Daboll said that putting in backup quarterbacks with the 1st team without any warning helps to mimic a real game time situation.

Practice was rather uneventful Tuesday, unless you consider the fact that Jones and his wide receivers are improving their chemistry, which is great to see because that is what camp is all about. Wan’Dale Robinson continues to impress with his speed and will absolutely be a real problem for opposing defenses.

The cornerback position continues to be an area of concern, but that can be attributed to this group being very young and being tested in every way possible in Wink Martindale’s blitz heavy defense. Adoree Jackson told us that “everyone is working to perfect their craft and we have all bought in." So while this is a young cornerback group, the expectation is that they will step up and continue to develop.

Golladay spoke at the podium today and told reporters he is his own worst critic, and he competes with himself every day. When asked if Giants fans have seen the real Kenny Golladay, he responded with, “no they haven’t, but I have a lot to prove.” Golladay also said, "You have to be smart to play in this system,” and that learning new concepts is something everyone is working on. Golladay displayed some self-awareness when asked where he could improve, stating, “making the 50/50 balls and there are little things I can do better on every play.”

The jury is still out on Golladay and his success here in New York, but he understands that he is a veteran on this team that is expected to produce as a WR1.

Practice ended on a very up lifting note with Giants owner John Mara announcing this year’s Ring of Honor inductees.  Ottis Anderson, Rodney Hampton, Joe Hampton, Leonard Marshall, Jimmy Patton and Kyle Rote will all be inducted during the 2022 season. Jersey Sporting News looks forward to watching the Ring of Honor ceremonies and we would like to extend a big congratulations to all the inductees.
