Giants hire Brian Daboll as head coach

A week after former Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen was hired as the new GM of the New York Giants, the organization announced the hiring of Brian Daboll as head coach. Daboll spent the previous four seasons as the offensive coordinator in Buffalo. He is the 20th head coach in franchise history.

Daboll was the first head coach candidate to interview for the position and had been considered the odds on favorite. From the start of the Giants' GM interviews, many believed there could be a package deal with a new head coach.

The Giants have suffered through five straight losing seasons and the tandem of Schoen and Daboll will now be charged with turning the organization around.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be named head coach of the New York Giants,” said Daboll through a team statement. “Thank you to Joe Schoen for believing in me and to John Mara and Steve Tisch and their families for entrusting me with this position. My immediate goal is to assemble a coaching staff – a strong staff that emphasizes teaching and collaboration and making sure our players are put in the position to be their best and, ultimately, to win games. That’s why all of us do this. To teach, to be successful, to develop talent, and to win. I have a pretty good idea where our fan base’s feelings are right now, and I get it. I promise we will work our tails off to put a team on the field that you will be proud to support and give us the results we all want.”

Daboll takes over for Joe Judge who was fired after two seasons.

Daboll has vast coaching experience

Daboll joined the Bills staff in 2018 as coordinator under coach Sean McDermott. Prior to that, he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Alabama under Nick Saban. In 2020, Daboll was voted the Associated Press’s NFL Assistant Coach of the Year. In his career, Daboll brings 20 years of NFL coaching experience to the Giants.

Schoen, as well as Giants ownership, have stated a commitment to Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback. Daboll has history of working with young QB's, and is credited with being a major part of the development of Bills' Josh Allen becoming a star in the NFL.
