Gone-carlo gives Yankees a whole new meaning

Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the Yankees’ 10-day injured list Sunday, April 16 with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. Since Stanton’s move to the IL, it seems the Yankees offense has been mostly gone-carlo along with him.

In his thirteen games played, Stanton, 33, was the team’s RBI co-leader with Franchy Cordero (OF), and was batting .269 with four home runs and 11 RBIs through 13 games. The five-time All-Star and former National League MVP is a career .264/.353/.537 hitter with 382 home runs and 982 RBIs.

In nine games played since Stanton’s setback, the Bombers have a record of 4-5, and they are combining for a batting average of .223 in 292 total at-bats.

The Judge-Ohtani Show: Angels Recap

The Yankees won their sixth series of the year against Shohei Ohtani’s Angels, taking games two and three of the three-game series. In this series, the highlight was when Yankees’ Captain Aaron Judge “sho’d” us who the ’22 AL MVP was. In game two of the series, Judge robbed a home run from Shohei Ohtani in the top of the first inning, and then turned around and knocked one out in the bottom of the first in his first at-bat of the game. In the same game, Judge made another Gold Glove-worthy play when he laid out to snatch a Brandon Drury go ahead RBI. This play single-handedly saved the game.

Cole plows through fourth win of the season: Blue Jays Recap

I think the Yankees might have a new arch nemesis in the Blue Jays. Vlad Guerrero Jr. has done his fair share of chirping along with starting pitcher Alek Manoah. Vladdy remarked that his favorite city to play in outside of “his house” is New York because he loves “[crushing] 'Los Yanquistas' (Yankees fans) and the Yankees.”

When asked if he’d ever play for the Yankees, Guerrero Jr. replied “No, not even dead.”

Unfortunately, only Gerrit Cole could put them in their place, earning the only win of the series. In his fourth outing, Cole pitched 5.2 innings, again allowing zero home runs or earned runs. Cole has been absolutely dominant in his first four starts and sits at a 0.79 ERA (third best across the league).

The Yankees got their first series loss of the year in this three-game series, their first division series at home. In this series, they took game two and gave up games one and three.

Gray and Gallo get revenge in their house: Twins Recap

Former Yankees (SP) Sonny Gray and (IF/OF/DH) Joey Gallo gave the Yankees a warm welcome to their new home in Minnesota in a three-game series.

Former Yankees (SP) (now Twins Ace) Sonny Gray got the ball for Game 1. In his fifth outing of the season, he worked eight strikeouts in seven innings-pitched and gave up zero earned runs. In his first five starts of the season, Gray is leading the league with the lowest ERA of 0.62.

Joey Gallo got a slice of revenge pie, too, with one double, two home runs, and three RBIs in this series.

Despite the Twins’ dominance in Games 1 and 2, the Yankees clapped back in Game 3, which also happened to be Yankees’ Captain Aaron Judge’s 31st birthday. In this game, the bats came alive again and the team combined for 14 hits in 39 at-bats.

On-Deck

The Yankees travel to Texas Thursday to face the Rangers in a four-game series. The last time the Yankees played a series at Globe Life Field, 2022 AL MVP Aaron Judge hit his 62nd home run of the 2022 season, smashing the previous 61-year old AL single-season home run record, which was previously held by Roger Maris at 61.

Following the four-game series in Texas, the Yankees will host the Guardians at home in a three-game series. They’ll get a day off following that series on May 4, but won’t get another day off until June 5.
