NJ/NY Gotham FC beat rival Red Stars at home

In what would prove to be a pivotal matchup towards league standings, it would be Gotham FC triumphing over the Chicago Red Stars 2-1 to take sole possession of 2nd place in the NWSL.

Gotham FC would get the scoring started late in the first half when Caprice Dydasco would find an open Allie Long who would chip the keeper to put them up 1-0 heading into halftime. They would build on their lead late in the second half when Midge Purce would be taken down just inside the box and awarded a penalty kick that she would convert to make the score 2-0. Chicago would close out the scoring for the evening in stoppage time when they would place a shot off the far post to make the final score 2-1.

“It was good for us to be able to play through some of their sustained pressure. They were very much looking to press and force us out wide and contain our play. It took us a while to figure it out and play through that pressure, but once we were able to start switching play a little bit more and started to play a little bit longer I think that caused them a few issues in terms of being able to get enough pressure on the ball. I think it was a game of few chances for both teams. Both teams defended well and were able to stop the other team from really building momentum or creating good chances, but just really happy to come away with the three points,” said Head Coach Freya Coombe.
