NJ/NY Gotham FC Face Chicago Red Stars at Home on Saturday to Reclaim Playoff Spot

It has been a rough six games for NJ/NY Gotham FC. With five losses and one tie, the team has found themselves pushed to seventh place, just on the outside of a playoff spot. In the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), the top six teams advance to the playoffs, and Gotham FC still hopes to be one of those six teams. Although the top of the table is dominated by first place Portland Thorns, Gotham is only seven points behind the second and third place teams, and only three points behind the fourth place team. The race for a playoff spot remains tight, making the extremely competitive NWSL a great league to watch this year.

Last Sunday, Gotham FC faced a tough 0-1 loss to the Orlando Pride at home in a showdown between two U.S. Women's National Team legends: New Jersey native Carli Lloyd for Gotham FC, and the Orlando Pride's starting goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris. This game marked the final match for former Gotham FC head coach Freya Coombe who will become the new head coach for expansion team Angel City FC in 2022.

This Saturday's match against the Chicago Red Stars marks the team's journey under new coaching staff: head coach Scott Parkinson, former assistant coach for the Chicago Red Stars, and longtime NWSL player Beverly "Bev" Goebel Yanez. A fresh perspective and new leadership could be just what Gotham FC needs to notch a win and keep their playoff dreams alive.

The last time Gotham FC faced the Chicago Red Stars was at Red Bull Arena on July 25th. Gotham FC put on a dominant performance winning 2-1 with goals from Allie Long and Margaret "Midge" Purce.
