Somerset Patriots' Jasson Dominguez Wows the Crowd

Clearwater, FL --The New York Yankees' first Spring Training game against the Philadelphia Phillies took place Saturday in Clearwater, FL. Despite the Yankees' loss, the highlight of the game was The Martian bomb by Jasson Dominguez as he hit an epic moonshot that was 109.7 mph off the bat. The 5-foot-10, one-hundred-ninety-pound switch-hitting Martian, blasted his first big league Spring Training home run. What he is doing at such a young age is incredible.

The 20-year-old, named after Jason Giambi, is the youngest player in Yankees Camp. The Dominican native was born in a village called Esperanza, which translates to "Hope" in English. This could be the spark of "Hope" the Yankees have been searching for. He showed power and speed during his first big-league camp. Dominguez's first at-bat groundout was hit 102.7 mph on a 3-0 pitch count and he almost beat it out as he hustled his way down the first baseline.

The Somerset Patriots prospect led in runs scored across all Yankee minor leaguers and hit 21 home runs over two minor league seasons. Last year was a huge step forward for Dominguez. Although 2021 was a rough year for him and some people did not believe he would pan out, many compared him to Mickey Mantle and Mike Trout, which gave him impossible expectations to fulfill.

From '21 to '22 he made adjustments to his stance and hands. These switches allowed him to be more consistent at the plate and get to his launch position faster and quicker to the ball. He even improved on his lefty swing as staying consistent has gained him .300 against fastballs 93 mph and above. An adjusted swing and better body control from Dominguez in 2022 helped the Patriots with their Championship run.

He was the best hitter during the championship series, hitting three home runs and driving in ten runs in the playoffs. In the final game, Jasson had two homers and six RBIs, leading the Patriots to victory. Another thing worth noting is Dominguez's ability to steal bases. He racked up 46 stolen bases in two seasons.

His presence at the plate and discipline show his new level of maturity. Jasson is a player that commands respect from teammates and was viewed as a team leader with the Tampa Tarpons. The Double-A team was very impressed with how he went about his business as he has shown a lot of poise beyond his years. The Yankees organization thinks very highly of him. Yankees manager Aaron Boone's press conference after the first Spring Training game confirms this point.

"He's talented. good quality At-bats. You could tell the guy has a real understanding and ease of the strike zone. There's no panic up there. It was good to see him really get into one," said Boone.

We do not know the plans for Jasson Dominguez and how quickly he will be moved to Triple-A with the Scranton RailRiders. If Dominguez continues to improve he could get called up to the Yankees at some point in the 2024 season.
