Yankees, Mets send a combined 10 players to MLB’s 92nd All-Star Game

The New York Yankees and the New York Mets combined for ten players at the 2022 Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Six players represented the team from the Bronx while four players represented the team from Flushing.

Fan voting for the showcase of baseball’s biggest talent began June 8 and rosters for the National League and American League teams were announced on July 8.

The Yankees sent outfielders Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, catcher Jose Trevino, starting pitchers Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes, and closer Clay Holmes. Judge and Stanton started the game for the American League at right field and left field, respectively

The Mets sent first baseman Pete Alonso, second baseman Jeff McNeil, outfielder Starling Marte, and closer Edwin Diaz. McNeil started the game for the National League at second base in replace of injured Miami Marlins infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Judge stepped up for the first plate appearance of the game for both New York teams and was struck out by Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw in the top of the 1st inning. After the National League scored two runs in the bottom of the frame, Stanton was called out on strikes facing Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara in the next inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, McNeil was hit by a pitch but did not come around to score.

San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove struck out Judge in the third inning. Before the fourth inning began, Alonso replaced Dodger Freddie Freeman at first base.

In his last at bat of the game, Stanton crushed a 457-foot, two-run home run to the left field seats off of Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin to tie the game up at two runs apiece. Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton followed right after with a home run of his own to make the score 3-2 in favor of the American League.

Trevino entered the game at catcher before the bottom of the fifth inning. McNeil grounded out to second base in the same frame.

Cortes entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. The lefty struck out Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley and walked Alonso. After a lineout and a hit by pitch, Cortes was able to strike out Marlins first baseman Garrett Cooper.

Trevino singled with one out in the seventh inning but was stranded at first.

In the eighth inning, Holmes came in to hold the lead for the American League, allowed a single, and notched two straight outs before being replaced by Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendricks for the final out of the frame.

In the 9th inning, Trevino grounded out to shortstop to close the book for the New York players for the night.

AL Wins, Stanton Named All-Star MVP

The American League won their ninth straight All-Star Game after Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase nailed the door with three straight strikeouts.

In his fifth All-Star Game of his career, Stanton was named the Most Valuable Player of the game.
