Monmouth releases football schedule for debut season in CAA

As Monmouth University embarks on a new future in the Colonial Athletic Association, Tuesday saw the school’s football schedule release for this fall in their debut season in the conference.

The Hawks will play 11 games, with eight games against CAA competition, and the other three games will take place against teams from the Patriot League. The schedule includes six home games at Kessler Field and five road games against FCS powerhouses, Villanova and Delaware.

“We are genuinely excited about our 2022 schedule,” said Monmouth head football coach Kevin Callahan. “As a first-year member of the CAA, we know that each conference game will be extremely challenging. In addition to an outstanding conference schedule, we have non-conference games against some competitive regional programs. In all, there are nine teams on the 2022 schedule with NCAA FCS Playoff experience.”

The lack of an FBS opponent for Monmouth is noticeable about the schedule. Over the last few years, the program has had at least one game against FBS competition, usually their first game of the season. Whether it is due to moving conferences from the Big South to the CAA or they could not fit an FBS game on the schedule, it’s a hope that Monmouth can get that game on the schedule in 2023.

The resumption of a prominent conference rivalry from the Northeast Conference between Monmouth and Albany is among the games that catch the eye. For 14 years, the Hawks and the Great Danes were members of the NEC and fought for the top spot in the conference annually. The last time Monmouth won the NEC, they did it on Albany’s home field in 2006 (a game I called for Monmouth on the radio while I was an undergrad there).
