Monmouth women's soccer clinches CAA regular season title

Monmouth Women's Soccer won the CAA regular season title in the program's first year in the conference after a 2-1 win against Northeastern on Sunday.

This conference match was significant for both teams as they were locked in and ready. The weather was not much of a factor in the first half, but the rain picked up in the second half. The defenses for both teams started strong as the fullbacks on both teams helped keep the scoreline low. They were able to trap the offenses early in the defensive third. Then, the passes started to open up the defense with great spacing on the pitch.

Northeastern started the scoring in the 32nd minute as Megan Putvinski scored her third goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Jessie Hunt and Avery Levangie, who fed the cross for the goal. The Huskies could not keep their lead for long, as the Hawks tied the match soon after.

Lauren Karabin scored her fourth goal of the season for Monmouth in the 34th minute and was assisted on an excellent ball from Jesi Rossman to tie the match at 1-1.

In the second half, Maddison Perna scored the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute off a perfect ball from Karabin. Monmouth had many more opportunities to extend the lead but couldn't capitalize. Their offense was more up-tempo as they attacked the Northeastern defense and provided spacing on the wing.

After missing last season with an ACL injury, Perna put her mark on the match and the season, as she provided the goal that sealed the CAA title. She has been a big part of the team's success this season, providing the Hawks with four goals and an assist in 2022. Karabin was the Player of the Match as she ended up with a goal and an assist.

Head coach Kylee Flynn leading Monmouth to a conference title in her first season is an incredible achievement. Flynn had the players' support from day one as they bought into the system and believed in each other that they could do something special.
