NJ/NY Gotham FC secures 3 points against Angel City FC

NJ/NY Gotham FC faced Angel City FC for the first time at the Banc of California Stadium. Gotham picked up the much-needed three points after Ifeoma Onumonu scored the game-winner in the 57th minute.

Leading up to this matchup, Gotham was on a two-game losing streak while Angel City beat the Washington Spirit and Kansas City Current in their last two games. Gotham's season has been anything but easy, yet they bounced back for the much-needed win.

The away side saw a few changes in the starting lineup. Ashlyn Harris, Ali Krieger and Margaret Purce all started for Gotham, after suffering from COVID-19 a few weeks prior. Angel City's lineup stayed consistent from their previous games.

Gotham came out on the front foot and stayed fairly dominant throughout the first half. Angel City's Jun Endo took the first shot of the match which was well-saved by Harris to keep the game level. Angel City had quite a few chances in the first half, but they were kept out by Harris and Gotham's defense.

In the 57th minute, Onumonu grabbed the game-winning goal for Gotham. Purce settled the ball in the box before laying it off to Onumonu, who slotted the ball near-post past former Gotham goalkeeper, Didi Haracic.

For the rest of the game, Angel City tried to find the back of the net, but Gotham's defense was impossible to beat. Harris's six saves on the night allowed her to achieve 500 career saves in the NWSL, leading the league. "I'm proud of 500 saves. It really is a testament to how long I've been doing this craft," Harris said.

"Today there was a togetherness in what we did," head coach Scott Parkinson said. He says the result came about because of the players' togetherness.

Gotham's performance was by far the best this season. The defensive work really came into play while facing the Angel City attack. The offensive performance allowed for the team to stay calm and get the goal they needed.
