NJ/NY Gotham FC down Courage in Instant Classic

They are calling it "Madness at Montclair."

In what was the highest scoring Challenge Cup game in NWSL history, NJ/NY Gotham FC took down the heavily favored North Carolina Courage in a battle of unbeaten teams to take sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division.

“I think it was a very exciting one for fans, for neutrals. We knew it was going to be a moment where we could look to counter-attack and we could look to build up our possession. With the return of some players from international duty, we knew we could put out a more attacking front line and then also have really good depth for the game changers to come in and they did make a big difference,” said Head Coach Freya Coombe.

In a game that saw four first half goals scored in eight minutes, including goals from U. S. National Team stars Carli Lloyd and Midge Purce, it made for a highly exciting first half. However, it would be a goal from French-Canadian Evelyne Viens during stoppage time that was the difference maker and game winner.

"I think it was a really good team goal and just showing how much we have this chemistry going on. That was the goal that made us win, so that was a really good feeling and I'm really happy we got those three points after this crazy game," said NJ/NY Gotham FC Forward Evelyne Viens.

NJ/NY Gotham FC looks to continue its winning ways when it travels to Washington, D.C., Tuesday, April 27 for a showdown with rival Washington Spirit. Kickoff is set for 7pm ET. The game will be broadcast on Paramount+.
