NJIT to hire Grant Billmeier as next men's basketball coach

Former Seton Hall center and assistant coach Grant Billmeier will be the next men’s basketball coach for the NJIT Highlanders. Billmeier, the Pennington native, has long-standing roots in the Garden State. Billmeier stared at St. Patrick’s High School in Jersey City. He then went on to play for center for Seton Hall, where he helped the Pirates reach two NCAA tournaments.

After his playing days, Billmeier returned to Seton Hall under Kevin Willard as a coordinator for basketball operations. He then spent a year as an assistant for FDU before returning to Seton Hall under Kevin Willard as an assistant coach. He most recently served as an assistant coach for Kevin Willard at Maryland.

Billmeier is best known for developing players. He has been credited for helping Angel Delgado, Romaro Gill, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Ike Obiagu develop into all-league caliber players. Sandro Mamukelashvili, who is playing in the NBA with the Spurs, finished his senior season as the Big East Player of the Year under the tutelage of Billmeier. Mamukelashvili took to Twitter regarding the hire of Billmeier saying, “Nobody deserves it more than G! Hardest working coach I know! NJIT got the best one!”

Billmeier is the fifth former Seton Hall player to now be an active head coach in the collegiate ranks. He joins Dan Hurley at Connecticut, his former teammate Donald Copeland at Wagner, Levell Sanders at Binghamton and current Seton Hall coach Shaheen Holloway. Only Duke has more former players as active collegiate head coaches with nine.
