When the Rutgers Scarlet Knights take the field on September 2 for their season opener against Temple, Greg Schiano and staff will feel confident, knowing Olakunle Fatukasi will be leading the defense. Fatukasi decided to return for another season and the expectation is the linebacker will be one of the Scarlet Knights leaders in a much anticipated campaign.
On Monday, Fatukasi was named to the Bednarik Award watch list presented by Mammoth Tech. The Bednarik Award is handed out annually to the best defensive player in college football.
Fatukasi Had Stand Out 2020 Season
Fatukasi led the Big Ten with 101 tackles and finished ninth in the nation averaging 11.2 tackles per game last season. His top individual performance was when he registered 18-tackles against Penn State.
In 2020, Fatukasi was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award which honors the best linebacker in the nation over the course of the season. Opposing offenses will need to account for Fatukasi on every play as the veteran looks to build on his previous strong season.
