Somerset Patriots Add Top Prospects To Roster, Voit Rehabs

New York Yankees Double-A affiliate Somerset Patriots announced a flurry of transactions on Tuesday afternoon, including news that Luke Voit, Yankees first baseman, will begin a rehab assignment with the Patriots starting June 15. Voit, recovering from an oblique strain, led Major League Baseball with 22 home runs in 2020. He will be with the team through the weekend.

The Patriots also announced that four pitchers, Luis Medina, Ken Waldichuk, Hayden Wesneski, and Zach Greene were all promoted to Somerset from Advanced-A Hudson Valley.

Medina is the Yankees #7 ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, and throws a fastball that hits triple digits. In 32.2 innings with Hudson Valley this season, he struck out 50 batters and posted a 2.76 ERA.

Waldichuk has arguably been the best pitcher in all of Minor League Baseball so far in 2021. The left handed starter and Yankees fifth round draft pick from 2019, has not allowed a single run through 30 ⅔ innings pitched, striking out 55 batters and holding opponents to a .120 batting average.

Wesneski is the Yankees #30 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The 2019 sixth round pick has posted a 1.49 ERA with 47 strikeouts over 36.1 innings with Hudson Valley.

Greene, the Yankees eighth round draft pick in 2019, held opponents to a .092 batting average with Hudson Valley, striking out 33 batters in 20 ⅓ innings pitched.

Somerset added right handed pitchers Addison Russ and Nick Green to their roster, both were sent from Triple-A Scranton.

Russ was traded to the Yankees from the Phillies last season, and was in big league camp with New York during the spring. Through his four minor league seasons, Russ posted a 2.91 ERA with 213 strikeouts in 164 innings, primarily serving as a mid-reliever.

Green has been a part of the Yankee system since the Carlos Beltran trade in 2016 when he was shipped from the Texas Rangers. He has since pitched at every level of the organization, with his most successful season coming in 2018 when he posted a 3.28 ERA with Advanced-A and was named a league All-Star.

In correspondence with the Patriots additions to the roster, pitchers Luis Gil, Matt Krook, and Greg Weissert were promoted to Triple-A Scranton. Pitchers Shawn Semple, Reid Anderson, Carlos Espinal, and infielder Oliver Dunn were transferred from Somerset to Hudson Valley. Patriots infielder Matt Pita was also activated off of the injured list.

Top Infield Prospect Already With Patriots

Additionally, infielder Oswald Peraza, New York Yankees #4 prospect and a top 100 MLB prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was promoted to Somerset from Hudson Valley last week.

The Patriots will welcome the Richmond Flying Squirrels to TD Bank Ballpark for a six game series beginning on Tuesday night, June 15th, at 7:05. Follow along on Jersey Sporting News to stay locked in on the Somerset Patriots and Minor League Baseball in New Jersey.
