Pirates tournament hopes take a hit with loss at Villanova

The Pirates tournament bubble didn’t burst but it certainly took a hit Saturday evening, as Seton Hall was defeated by Villanova 58-54.

In what resembled an old school Big East game, the Wells Fargo Center continued to be a house of horrors for Seton Hall. Seton Hall head coach Shaheen Holloway when describing the physicality of the game played by two original Big East members said, “It’s the Big East man, that’s why it’s the best conference in the country.”

The Pirates who trailed by as many as fourteen points, were unable to overcome the deficit in large part to their eighteen turnovers on the offensive end. Head coach Shaheen Holloway said, “You can’t turn the ball over to a team that doesn’t press eighteen times.” Inconsistency on the offensive end continues to be an issue for the Pirates, who play in spurts. There is an old saying in sports, you practice how you play. Coach Holloway reiterated again in this press conference that the inconsistency shown from his teams in games, is a result from the inconsistencies shown by his team in practice.

A consistency from the Pirates has been their ability to play at a high level on the defensive end of the floor. Seton Hall shut down Villanova star guard Justin Moore, holding him to one point scored. The Pirates as a team had five blocks and nine steals, as they held another opponent to under sixty points scored.

On the offensive end the Pirates were led by Tyrese Samuel and Kadary Richmond. Samuel posted a double double with fourteen points and ten rebounds. Richmond had a near double double with ten points and nine assists. Seton Hall senior and New Jersey native Jamir Harris reached the college milestone of one thousand points in this contest.

Pirates Left To Fight For NCAA Tournament

When asked about the upcoming schedule Seton Hall senior Jamir Harris said, “We gotta fight, everyone in the locker room knows that.” The Pirates will be fighting to keep their NCAA tournament hopes alive as they return to action at the Prudential Center to take on the Georgetown Hoyas Tuesday evening.
