Portland Thorns escape Gotham FC in downpour

In the highly anticipated Challenge Cup rematch, NJ/NY Gotham FC threw everything they had at the Portland Thorns, but it would not be enough as the Thorns would escape the rain soaked Red Bull Arena with the 1-0 victory and three points.

"I think we did better as the game went on and were able to put together some of the movements that we wanted to see as a club which is good but unfortunately we just couldn't find the back of the net. Credit to Portland for doing that today," said Head Coach Freya Coombe.

Gotham Looks to Take Positives From Loss to Thorns

Despite losing their first game of the season, Gotham FC will look to focus on the positives from the match as they reset and for their next game this coming Saturday.

"It was a rainy day and you know that made the conditions, made things tough but all and all I think we played okay, we played well, I think we got a lot that we want to accomplish out of the game, unfortunately it's still a loss. Portland is always a hard opponent to play against so you know it was a lot of back and forth, a lot of transition play, and you know we had a lot of missed passes which we need to clean up. All and all I think we are starting to put things together that we want to accomplish this season so not a terrible performance but still room to grow," said Forward Ifeoma Onumomu.

Fans won't have much time to wait to see how NJ/NY Gotham FC can improve off their recent loss as they host OL Reign this Saturday at 7pm ET at Red Bull Arena. The game will be broadcast on Paramount+ and tickets are still available.
