Princeton flys past Harvard with three third period goals

Freshman Issy Wunder led the team with two goals for the Princeton University Tigers as they defeated the Harvard University Crimson, 3-0, in an Ivy League matchup. Princeton is 9-6-1 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while Harvard is 4-10-2 overall and 3-7-2 in conference play.

Princeton celebrated Hobey 100 Weekend, which featured an event outside the rink that allowed fans to take pictures with the Stanley Cup. Hobey 100 celebrates the 100th year the Hobey Baker Rink has been in use.

Wunder started the game with a shot that went wide left of Harvard's goaltender sophomore Alex Pellicci and the net. Even though it missed the net, Princeton gathered the rebound and tried to stay with it. Harvard then gathers the turnover from Princeton, but luckily for the Tigers, the Crimson was called offside, preventing any major attack. The Crimson had their first shot through freshman Sophie Ensley who shot after the faceoff was won, but it was saved by Princeton's goalie freshman Taylor Hyland.

Princeton had another shot from freshman Emerson O'Leary, but it was saved by Pellicci. Junior Shannon Hollands followed up with a shot for the Crimson, but Hyland easily grabbed it before laying it off to her teammate. Junior Sarah Fillier earned the first major penalty of the game for cross-checking, resulting in Harvard having a two-minute power play. Hollands took a shot at the start of the power play, but Hyland saved it expertly. Freshman Jade Arnone took three shots in a row for the Crimson, two went wide left, and the final one was saved and deflected off of Hyland.

Freshman Kate Kasica went to take a shot, but she did make clean contact resulting in Princeton taking the puck down to the net for a shot, but it was blocked. After a turnover, senior Anne Bloomer took a shot, but luckily for the Tigers, senior Mariah Keopple blocked it. O'Leary had another shot with the first period winding down, but it was blocked again by Pellicci. The first period ended 0-0, with the Tigers in control for the last half of the period.

The Tigers ended the period with 24 total shots and ten on target. Hyland ended with 11 total saves. The Crimson had 21 total shots and 11 on target. Pellicci ended with ten saves.

30 seconds into the second period, sophomore Paige Lester earned herself a trip to the penalty box for a tripping call giving the Tigers a two-minute power play. O'Leary took a shot in the dying seconds of the power play, but it just went wide left. Junior Annie Keul took a close-range shot after the power play, but Pellicci was able to grab the puck in her glove to prevent the goal.

Sophomore Gabi Davidson Adams had a shot for the Crimson, but it was blocked by junior Stef Wallace and the second shot was jumped on by Hyland. Arone took two deep shots for the Crimson, with the first being saved after Hyland blocked it with her legs at the last second and the other going right into her glove. With a minute remaining, Harvard had control of the puck and pushed to get the game's first goal. Unfortunately for them, Lester earned a trip to the penalty box with a five-minute cross-checking penalty. The period ended 0-0.

The Tigers ended with 26 total shots and ten on target, while the Crimson had 20 total shots and 14 on target. Hyland had 14 saves and Pellicci had ten saves.

To start the third period, senior Kristin Della Rovere had a breakaway opportunity, but luckily for the Tigers, Hyland blocked it wide to continue her shutout. Princeton took control of the puck again, resulting in a penalty for sophomore Jenna MacDonald for tripping.

At the 3:50 mark, Wunder got the first goal of the game on a power play. She shot the puck right through the legs of Pellicci to make the score 1-0. Following the goal, Keopple earned a penalty for slashing, giving Harvard the advantage. The Crimson then grabbed a penalty for too many players on the ice resulting in a 5v5 matchup. Harvard was able to string together good looks on the net, but they could not capitalize on any.

For the second goal of the game, Wunder took the puck down the ice before she was able to take it around Pellicci and slip it through the open spot of the net to give the Tigers two with 11 minutes to go. Sophomore Mia Coene had a good look on target to add the third for Princeton, but Pellicci saved the shot. Sophomore Dominique Cormier scored the game's final goal as she took a shot that rebounded in front of Pellicii to allow Fillier to whip the puck into the top corner of the net. The final period ended 3-0, and Princeton took home the win.

The Tigers ended with 83 total shots with 32 on target, and the Crimson had 54 total shots and 32 on target. Hyland ended with 32 total saves and Pellicci ended with 29 total saves.
