Red Bulls transfered and signed Carlos Coronel to three-year deal

The 2021 season of the New York Red Bulls was an interesting roller coaster that no one knew where the club was headed but made their goal as they qualified for the playoffs. Their unbeaten streak was a thing of beauty that would get them to that goal towards the final 12 regular season matches.

The man who was a part of that run was Brazilian goalkeeper Carlos Coronel, who had a rocky beginning, but a fantastic end. While on loan from sister club Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, Director of Sport Kevin Thelwell was keen to either extend that loan or make a purchase to keep Coronel with the club in Harrison, New Jersey.

This Monday morning on December 6th Thelwell pulled the trigger and has purchased Coronel and has given him a three-year deal with an option for the 2025 season. “Carlos was a big part of our success last season and we are delighted to extend his stay with us,” Head of Sport Kevin Thelwell said. “Finishing as one of the top goalkeepers last season made it an easy decision for us to bring him back.”

Coronel Part of Three Way Tie For Most Clean Sheets

Coronel along with Joe Willis of Nashville SC and William Yarbrough of the Colorado Rapids were in a three-way tie for first place in the Clean Sheet category with 13. Seven of those 13 came from the unbeaten streak within the final 12 games of the season. He ended the regular season with a record of 13-12-9 with a 0.97 goals-against average.

“Carlos is a big talent and I am pleased to see him back with us,” said Head Coach Gerhard Struber. “Not only is he a good person to have in our locker room, but someone who is key to build upon our success from last season to the next.”

With Coronel locked up, Thelwell can now look to try and bring back several players who were influential from last season, meaning trying to talk to Stoke City to bring back Tom Edwards, or trying to get a loan deal to keep Caden Clark in New York from Red Bull Leipzig of the German Bundesliga, after losing Kyle Duncan on a free transfer.

But so far one piece to the 2022 season puzzle has been kept, can Thelwell continue to get more? We need to wait and see.
