Rider, Monmouth Exit While St. Peter's Moves On in MAAC Women's Basketball Tournament

On Tuesday, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) kicked off the first round of the 2022 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship. Jersey teams Rider and Monmouth, were set to play Iona and Canisius to determine who will move onto the quarterfinals.

The first game of the tournament featured No. 8 Iona against No. 9 Rider. Rider’s first half came from a strong first quarter followed by a slow second quarter. Rider scored 28 compared to Iona’s 40 points in the half leaving them behind going into the second half. 

They shot 67% from beyond the arch and 42% from the field. Iona’s 25-12 second quarter gave them advantage for the rest of the game.

The Broncos scored 30 points in the second half to finish the game losing 74-58 to be knocked out of the MAAC championships. Rider’s Jessika Schiffer led the Broncos with 19 points but it wasn’t enough to overtake Iona. Rider finished 9-21 on the season.

The second game to take place was No. 11 Canisius against No. 6 Monmouth. Monmouth lost 71-65 which was the biggest upset of the day. The Hawks stayed behind the Golden Griffins the entire game. Each quarter showed a strong performance from both teams but Canisius came out on top. 

The Hawks ended the first half shooting 41% from the field and 22% from beyond the arch. The second half showed similar play with the Hawks shooting 44% in the field and 17% from beyond the arch.

Monmouth’s Stella Clark led the team in scoring with 19 points but it wasn't enough to lead the Hawks to victory. They finished 14-16 on the season.

Saint Peter's Advances to MAAC Quarterfinals

The third New Jersey school, Saint Peter's University entered the tournament as the N0. 7 seed and advanced with a first round win over No. 10 seed Marist, 49-29. Sophomore forward Sky Castro led the way for the Peacocks, scoring nine points and grabbed a career high 19 rebounds. Kendrea Williams added ten points and six boards, while Kaila Dawkins recorded ten points and six rebounds of her own.

The Peacocks held Marist to 19% shooting and 5% from behind the arc while converting 18 turnovers into 18 points. Saint Peter's will take on No. 2 seed Quinnipiac in the Quarterfinals, Wednesday at 3:30pm.
