Rutgers Brings Unmatched Energy to the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl

Rutgers came all the way from 34-degree, New Jersey to a beautiful, blue-skied, and sweltering Jacksonville, Florida. Right off the bat, they have to establish some sort of dominance through their readiness in order to gain respect from their opponents and the fans traveling from the great Garden State in support.

Rutgers' Wide Reciever and Jacksonville native, Isaiah Washington explains his emotions when receiving the call that his very own Scarlet Knights had accepted the invitation to play in the 77th TaxSlayer Gator Bowl as the replacement for Texas A&M due to their Academic Progress Rate.

Washington says, "When I heard the news I was in shock, then just pure excitement. It is not often when you get a chance to come back to your hometown after college.. this is definitely a blessing."

The buzz of nerves and excitement that surrounds Rutgers and (17) Wake Forest's upcoming match-up rests on a single question... how will each team handle the late change of plans leading up to game time?

"Shocked" is a word that has been used frequently regarding Rutgers' (5-7 record) placement in this unpredictable Bowl Game. But, Defensive Line Julius Turner reassures those who are listening, supporting, and undermining their efforts, "I knew we were going to be prepared... so we're ready and we're chopping too."

Head Coach, Greg Schiano gathered his troops quickly and efficiently in order to ensure the challenge and opportunity would be met with his team's best efforts through and through. Punter, Adam Korsak traveled all the way across the globe to his home in Australia just to receive word that he was needed in the states.. for good reason.. oh and fast! Obstacles were overcome and the occasion is finally approaching.

The Scarlet Knights have been training well, enjoying downtime in the hot tub, or team bonding with activities like TopGolf to prepare themselves for their chance to make history.  Schiano says, "The bowl experience is a reward for your team.  I think you have to make that something that they look back on as a great memory and an enjoyable thing." The team is living out their Head Coach's vision to a tee.

Rutgers gathered quite the fan base on December 30th at the Jacksonville Seawalk Pavillion for a pep rally to show their love for the Scarlet Knights and hope for the upcoming game to play out in their favor. The Rutgers Dance and Cheer Teams lit up the stage with bright smiles, fun dances, and engaging souvenirs. The energy is here and ready to be used up as Rutgers Football faces Wake Forest.

Watch and rally behind your Scarlet Knights by tuning into ESPN, live streaming on ESPN+, or showing out to the TIAA Bank Field on December 31st at 11:00 a.m.
