Rutgers Men's Basketball Falls to Illinois in Big Ten Opener.

Rutgers Men's Basketball was outmatched as they dropped their Big Ten opener against Illinois, 51-86. This loss topped off the poor play seen throughout their preseason, pushing their overall record to a tie of 4-4.

Previously, there was a glimpse of hope as the Scarlet Knights beat out the Clemson Tigers on their own court in the Jersey Mike's Arena. Rutgers fans had an instilled excitement coming into this game against Illinois, which was the first of regular conference play… It seemed like the previous win was going to set the boys straight, but their newest performance left supporters unsure of any future victories.

Rutgers was not able to fire on any cylinder, with stats of shots 31% from the field while only making two out of four shots from the free-throw line, there was not much room for success. The Scarlet Knights were also lacking presence and effort on the defensive end, therefore leaving the team without a way to even survive on the court. Pikiell explains how Rutgers' "fortification" was practically nonexistent, “Our defense gave up way too many points. It was active for 10 percent of the game.”

Junior leader, Paul Mulcahy led the team with four assists while Rutger's promising freshman, Jaden Jones leads in points (10) and rebounds (5).  New addition, determined freshman, Jalen Miller showed excellent fight and consistenly raises the energy on the team; a lot of eyes are on him now.

The Scarlet Knights have been deprived of Geo Baker's talent and grit out on the court for the last few games. Interestingly enough, Illinois was also without playmaker Andre Curbelo due to his neck/head injury, therefore, this seemingly evened the playing field prior to play. This was clearly not the case, concluding that without Baker, there will be a lot of make shifting for Head Coach, Pikeill to sort out.  He will be looking to stretch out his team far enough to allow the Scarlet Knights a chance for when Baker is able to return and contribute.

Head Coach, Pikeill continues to express his love and excitement for this team, but he is definitely seeking results that are different from what his boys are producing. “We have a lot of work to do. We have six days and we have Purdue team coming here who is playing as well as any other team in the country.”
