Saint Peter's trio of guards enter transfer portal

On Tuesday, Saint Peter's guards Doug Edert, Daryl Banks III and Matthew Lee announced they are going into the transfer portal after three years each with the Peacocks.

The move from the players will immediately begin speculation that the trio could join their former coach Shaheen Holloway at Seton Hall. Holloway returned to Seton Hall last week after spending four years with Saint Peter's.

The Peacocks became the story of this year's NCAA Tournament, becoming the first 15 seed to advance to the Elite Eight. They defeated Kentucky and Purdue en route to the feat, which showcased the small Jesuit school from Jersey City.

Edert became a national star as he averaged 14 points in the tournament's first three games. The guard even picked up a NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deal with Buffalo Wild Wings based on his play in March Madness. During his time at Saint Peter's, Edert averaged eight points and shot 39 percent from beyond the arc, including 41 percent this season.

Banks III and Lee ran the Saint Peter's offense proficiently during their three years with the Peacocks. Banks led the team in scoring (11.5) this season and led Saint Peter's with 27 points in their upset win over Kentucky. Lee scored seven points per game as he became a vital bench piece for Holloway, especially during the Peacocks' run through the MAAC and NCAA Tournaments.

All three players came to Saint Peter's in Holloway's second season with the program. Since their arrival, the Peacocks have a 54-35 record, including a 38-20 record in MAAC play.

Holloway goes to Seton Hall with the program losing six players to graduation, including guards Bryce Aiken, Jared Rhoden, Myles Cale and Jamir Harris. The three Saint Peter's guards could help soften the blow of a Pirate team devoid of many options at the guard position. It is not guaranteed that Lee, Banks and Edert will transfer to Seton Hall, but it wouldn't hurt Holloway to have three players who know his coaching style to suit up for the Pirates next season.
