Seton Hall’s Tyrese Samuel declares for NBA draft while entering the transfer portal

A top priority for Seton Hall head coach Shaheen Holloway this off-season was convincing Pirates' big man Tyrese Samuel to stick around for one more season in South Orange. The 6' 10" forward averaged eleven points and nearly six rebounds per game last year. Samuel had his best collegiate season under Holloway playing center, a new role for the stretch forward. That one season under Holloway was enough for Samuel, who announced he would be declaring for the NBA draft while at the same time entering the transfer portal.

Tyrese Samuel may not return to South Orange, but that does not mean Seton Hall will not see Samuel again. Samuel declared for the NBA draft without hiring an agent, which grants him the ability to maintain his college eligibility. Samuel, who wishes to return to a more stretch-forward role instead of playing center, will be highly sought after by major programs nationwide. Florida, Colorado, Wake Forest, Virginia, Kansas State, Oklahoma and most Big East schools have contacted the former Seton Hall big man.

Samuel is the second Seton Hall forward to enter the transfer portal, joining Tray Jackson. Jackson was expected to enter the transfer portal, as he played a limited role this season. Seton Hall will return both Dre and Tae Davis to their front court, but this will be an area that Shaheen Holloway will look to address in the coming weeks through the transfer portal. Adding front-court depth and looking to replace Samuel will be vital for Seton Hall to succeed next season.
