It was the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object as Sky Blue FC met future NWSL Challenge Cup opponent, the Washington Spirit, in their preseason finale.
Sky Blue FC wouldn't take long to get on the board as Paige Monaghan would find the back of the net in the third minute off a McCall Zerboni assist. The Spirit would respond shortly before halftime when Ashley Sanchez put a short range shot past Sky Blue keeper DiDi Haracic. In the sixtieth minute, it would be NWSL newcomer Sodam Lee who would score the game winner for Sky Blue as she delivered a perfect volley to close out the scoring.
"It's great to go into the start of the Challenge Cup with our 3-0 preseason," said Head Coach Freya Coombe. "We knew today would be our biggest challenge but we were very disciplined defensively in the first half and then we were able to play more possession in the second half. Attacking offensively we asked for ourselves to be efficient and make those those final balls and final chances count and that's what happened with our goals today."
With preseason in the books, Sky Blue FC now turns its attention to the NWSL Challenge Cup and its opening match-up in Orlando on April 14.
