Somerset Patriots Throw A Combined No Hitter Against Hartford Yard Goats

The Somerset Patriots threw their second combined no-hitter in franchise history on Wednesday against the Hartford Yard Goats on the road as they won 5-0 to improve to 78-48 on the season. Pitchers Yoendrys Gomez and Steven Jennings were the ones who threw the combined no hitter for Somerset. This was the second game of a double header where Yankees pitcher Luis Severino pitched in the first game during his rehab assignment. Gomez and Jennings had everything clicking, while the offense had their back.

Gomez went five innings and picked up the win as he only allowed one walk and had five strikeouts.  Jennings pitched a perfect two innings as he struck out all six batters that he faced. The game was only seven innings because of the double header. Catcher Rodolfo Duran had a great game plan with them heading into this game. The combined no-hitter was huge because they saved most of the other pitchers, while they had to use some in the first game of the day in Severino's rehab start.

The Somerset Patriots' offense was fantastic in this game as they got home runs from Duran and Burt. The former hit his eighth home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning to start the scoring at 2-0. Burt smashed his 11th homer of the season two batters later to make the score 3-0, while Jesus Bastidas and Duran each drove in a run in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-0. The Patriots accumulated 11 hits on the game and could have scored more runs as they left 15 men on base.

The pitching was dominant for Somerset Patriots as they did not allow the Hartford Yard Goats to get into a rhythm. The defense stepped up huge tonight behind Gomez and Jennings, making sure no mistakes were made. Both pitchers feature different stuff as they were able to keep the Yard Goats hitters off balance the whole game.

Severino is the good luck charm when it comes to combined no-hitters for the Somerset Patriots because he was also there for the first one. All the credit also goes to the catcher Duran who was a big part in this happening for Gomez and Jennings.
