Somerset Patriots Non-Roster Invitees - ST recap

Tampa, FL --Florida is heating up and we are not talking about the weather. Yankees Non-Roster Invitees have brought the heat to Steinbrenner field at spring training Camp and has left some fans wanting to see more. Day three of the entire squad showing up for practice. Amongst the veterans, here is a recap on the Non-Roster Invitees.

Patriot's top prospect, Anthony Volpe Thursday Volpe went 3 for 3, competing for shortstop position. He used all sides of field. He pulled a double against Ian Hamilton and also hit one to opposite side of the field vs James Norwood. When Volpe gets a shot it will be fun to watch.
Infielder Andres Chaparro, who had 289 BA, 19 hr, and 52 RBI’s last season,  looked solid showing strong defense in drills and hitting long fly balls. Yesterday he pulled a ball and hit a long shot out to left field.  On Thursday he hit another HR against  left handed pitcher Lisandro Santos to left-center, hitting the scoreboard, on the first pitch.

Another Patriot getting buzz, outfielder Jasson Dominguez who has been hitting the ball well in batting practice. He will be on the starting roster for the first Yankees game on Saturday as per Boone Presser on Thursday. Boone says he is excited about Dominguez and when he graduated levels last year, across three different levels, he improved in every aspect and got better as the competition got better. He has been looking real good and looking forward to seeing him in action.

For pitching, Deivi Garcia who spent some time with the Patriots last year, struck-out Kyle Higashioka, he got Ben Rortvedt with an off-speed pitch. That was his first live session this spring. Mitch Spence who spent time with Patriots last year before being promoted, struck out Volpe on Wednesday and threw a scoreless inning.

Sean Boyle, who was one of the top Patriots pitchers last year received his first big league invite to camp this year. He struck out Peraza on Thursday and threw three live innings, like Spence, he also got called up last year. Boyle doesn't rely on velocity but on smarts and location, and cutter has been an x-factor for him, showing good command of the ball today.

Player to keep on the radar, outfielder Elijah Dunham, he finished the season strong in double-A with the Somerset Patriots. He's good fielder, with speed and hit 17 home runs. Boone says he's excited about the prospects knocking on the door and new wave of talent being called up, "your Volpe's, Peraza's, Dominguez, Dunham's, and Wells."
