Somerset Patriots Take Two From Reading To Open Season

The Somerset Patriots faced off against the Reading Fightin Phils this weekend, winning two of the three games in the series.

In the series, the Patriots offense combined for four home runs, 19 RBI, and 30 hits.

Top prospect Anthony Volpe, in his first three games for Somerset, went 3-for-12, a double, one RBI, and four runs scored. LF Elijah Dunham and C Josh Breaux played big parts in the series. Dunham went 5-for-13, with a double, triple, and home run. He netted one stolen base, drove in four runs and scored three times. Breaux went 4-of-13, had two home runs and a double, driving in  six runs and scoring twice.

Patriots pitching in the series gave up 14 hits, three home runs, nine earned runs, 18 walks, and struck out 34. The Patriots struggled in game one of the series with 10 walks but seemed to have better command in games two and three of the series

Ken Waldichuk and Randy Vasquez pitched very well in both of their outings over the weekend. Neither starter allowed a run and only allowed a total of three Reading batters. Waldichuk, in his first outing of the season, pitched went innings, stricking out seven, and gave up two hits, and had two walks. Vasquez pitched four innings, giving up just one hit, and two walks, while striking out six.

Patriots Set For Home Opener


The Somerset Patriots home opener is Tuesday, April 12 at TD Bank Ballpark. They will be facing off against the 2-1 Erie SeaWolves in a six-game series. First pitch for Tuesday is at 6:35 PM.
