Trenton Thunder Win in a Walk-Off 12-11

Yesterday, the Trenton Thunder came back from 11-3 to win 12-11 on a Christian Merriwether walk-off double against Frederick in their second to last home game of the year improving to 27-39. Fan attendance was over five thousand because of fireworks night. No one expected them to come back in this wild game, but the Trenton Thunder never gave up and started to chip away at the lead. Both teams combined for 23 runs and 26 hits last night as the game was filled with offensive firepower.

Christian Capuano got the start for the Thunder and had his up and downs on the night. He allowed eight hits and eight earned runs in 5 1/3 innings but struck out six batters as well. Ryan Sandberg struggled mightily as he only recorded one out, while allowing three hits and three runs. Connor VanCleave and DJ Wilkinson were nearly flawless on the mound as they combined to give up two hits in the final 3 1/3 innings of the game.

The Trenton Thunder's offense struggled in the beginning but was able to score six runs in the seventh, 2 in the eight and 1 in the ninth. Outfield Christian Merriweather talked about how the Thunder was able to bounce back and get the momentum they needed to pull out the win.

"I mean honestly it has been a tough year for us the whole year so, we had a lot of moments when we were down," Merriweather said about the Thunder's rally. "We continue to play baseball. Down 11-3 but starting to get rolling. Things kept clicking, came up with a big double, get ourselves into it. That's what happens when you keep working hard."

Ryan McCarthy had big bases clearing double in the sixth inning to cut the lead to five and make it 11-6. Paul Coumoulos made a big impact at the plate as he drove in a pair of runs, while Damien Yenzi scored a team-high three runs. Merriwether had the big walk off double sending fans home happy after the fireworks were finished. He talked about getting the big walk-off hit for the Thunder.

"Honestly I had a thought in the outfield that I was going to get a chance," Merriweather said about his walk-double.  "Four batters up and figured he wouldn't get all of us out and you know I was ready for it. Kind of mad I missed the fastball. Luckily, he threw a slider that I got good barrel to it and just skipped over the back. Luckily, my boy troy worked hard scoring from third."

Christian Merriwether talking about being home and the fans

"It's fun, we have a tough crowd but great fans, great to be home, fantastic atmosphere, better stadiums in the league, this one of my best moments with the family being in the crowd, big walk off hit, Saturday night, we will have a good night."
