WEEK 1 WRAP-UP Mayfield Marches Manalapan to Victory Over Marlboro By James Smith

Manalapan is home to one of the most talented rosters in the state of New Jersey, and it’s fronted by the dynamic offensive duo of running back Naim Mayfield and quarterback Luke Corcione.

The seniors placed their impressive skill-sets on full display during a Week 1 matchup with Class A North rival Marlboro, leading the Braves (1-0, 1-0) to a decisive 44-0 shutout of the Mustangs (0-1, 0-1).

Mayfield’s workload was minimal, but his output was something out of a video game, as he only needed 10 carries to register 260 yards and five touchdowns.

Mayfield found the end zone from 51, 54, 45, and 24 yards, before capping his night with a four-yard scoring plunge.

Ocean County’s biggest Week 1 upset went to Southern Regional, as the Rams (1-0, 1-0) knocked off defending Class A South champion and sectional state finalist Toms River North (0-1, 0-1).

A Southern touchdown run by Joe Miele in the fourth quarter cut the Mariners lead to 14-13, and set the Rams up with a chance to tie the game on the ensuing extra point. However, an offsides penalty convinced the Rams to go for two, and they called upon Miele once more, who rumbled into the end zone to stake his club to 15-14 advantage.

The scoring run was Miele’s second of the night, but it was a interception return for a touchdown on Toms River North’s following possession by Luke Galan that clinched the victory.
